Formative Assessments for STEM: Before and After

The Before and After formative assessment is a valuable tool for student redirection as well as reflection.

In this formative assessment, students are asked to tell about any misconceptions that they had going into the lesson and then correct them by writing what they now know.

With having students identify these misconceptions, they are demonstrating (at the very least) active listening skills.  When we have them go a step further and counteract that misconception, learning starts to take place as students begin correctly bringing concepts together.  (Plus, in my own experience, if one student has a misconception, chances are that others have jumped to that incorrect conclusion as well, so I like to read them aloud and clarify them.)
