In our latest series, Teaching STEM through Fairy Tales II, students are challenged to work in teams to help our fairy tale characters. In the tale of The Frog Prince, the princess loses her ball at the bottom of the pond and a friendly frog promises to retrieve it if she promises to let him live with her in the castle.
Students work to design and build an arm/crane that will help the princess retrieve her ball. In completing this design challenge, students build their teamwork skills, use the Engineering Design Process and practice NGSS Engineering Design Performance Expectations.
This week on our fairy tale journey, we’re going to talk about Cinderella. And who doesn’t love a tale of princes, princesses and a pair of wicked step-sisters? As the cruel step-sisters crush Cinderella’s hopes of going to ball, the helpful house critters help her do all of her chores so that she can make it there in time!
In this design challenge, students work to design and build a device that will help Cinderella clean more efficiently so that she can go to the ball! As always, materials are cost-effective and easily found. Students work in teams to learn and practice the NGSS engineering design performance expectations.
