4 Super Fun Science Experiments for Kids

Summer is sadly winding down and it is nearly Back to School time!  What to do in these last few days of summer?  Have some fun with science experiments, of course!  Here are 4 super fun, easy  and low-cost ones to try:

Summer Science Experiments for Kids- Sidewalk Chalk

Summer is soon slipping away, but we’ve got time for one more fun summer science experiment.  It’s time for Sidewalk (or driveway) Chalk!

With only a couple of low-cost items, kids can experiment to make the best recipe for Sidewalk Chalk.

Here’s what you need:

  • Plaster of Paris (powder)
  • Paper Cups (the waxy ones)
  • Craft sticks or plastic spoons (for stirring)
  • Water
  • Tempera Paint or Food Coloring

Mix the Plaster of Paris with water and one (or more) paint/food colors.  Be sure to document how much plaster and water is being added so you can generate the perfect sidewalk chalk.  Work quickly because the plaster will dry fast in this summer heat.  Pour each “recipe” into a separate cup and let sit.  Once dry, peel away the waxy paper cup to reveal the stick of chalk and try it out!  Which recipe works the best?  How does using the paint/food coloring affect your recipe?  What could you add to improve the recipe?

Summer Science Experiments for Kids- Wonderful Water

A fantastic thing happened this summer!  Holly from WaterTestingKits reached out to see how her company can help science teachers.  After a brief chat, we decided that it would be great to show how to use their materials in your classrooms…and give one away!

These little water testing kits are very economical and would be great for science fairs or student-based inquiry projects.  Each one comes with a little student workbook that helps kids test for alkalinity, hardness, pH and a bunch of other things.   I am a big proponent of data collection in the classroom, so this is right up my alley, and probably your too.

For example, have you ever wondered about the quality of your bottled water versus that of other companies?  Or, is bottled water really better than regular ole tap water?  Now your students can find out!

I won’t spoil the fun for you, but let’s just say I was a little surprised at the results.

Summer Science Experiments for Kids- Super Slime

For our next science experiment, how about some Independence Day patriotic slime?  With some glitter, food coloring and confetti, this slime is sure to be a big hit.

The science of slime is that it is a non-Newtonian fluid, which means that its viscosity (ability to flow) is dependent on how much stress is applied to it.  For example, if you slowly stretch it, you will get one long gooey mess, but if you quickly try to pull it, it will break.

So how do you make it?  You can find pages and pages of pre-made recipes, but let’s take the opportunity for our junior engineers and scientists to investigate that on their own.

In this design challenge, students work with a prescribed set of materials to develop and test the best slime recipe.

Summer Science Experiments for Kids- Rock Candy

What could be better than summer, kids, science…and candy!  This week, we’re going to examine the science behind Rock Candy, but first, the fun part- making the candy!

This candy is so easy to prepare.  The hard part is seeing how long you can wait before eating it!  So, what materials do I need?

  • 1- small glass jar (must be glass)
  • 1- craft stick
  • 1- clothes pin (optional)
  • 4 cups- granulated sugar (plus 1 tbs)
  • 2 cups- water
  • food coloring
  • flavor oil or extract
  • plastic wrap or paper towel
  • adult supervision

What do I need to do?

  1. Clean out the jar with hot water.  Make sure sure it is rinsed thoroughly.
  2. Put 2 cups of water in a medium pot and bring to a boil.  Add 4 cups of sugar a little at a time, stirring in between.
  3. Once all 4 cups of sugar has been added and dissolved, remove the pot from the stove and add food coloring and flavoring if desired.  Stir to incorporate.
  4. Let the liquid cool for about 10 minutes.  Then, carefully pour it into the jar.
  5. Wet the craft stick and coat it with the remaining sugar.  Place the sugar covered stick into the jar and secure with the clothes pin if needed.
  6. Cover the jar with plastic wrap or paper towel and set in a cool place.
  7. Crystals should appear in about 3 hours and continue to form for a couple of days.

Where’s the Science?

First, we dissolved a lot of sugar (4 cups) into a little bit of water (2 cups).  Creating a situation where no more sugar can be dissolved in the water at a particular temperature is called a supersaturated solution.  A supersaturated solution is very unstable because it can  only “hold” the sugar for so long since there is so much of it.   When it falls out of the solution, the sugar will begin to cling to the craft stick because it is more porous than the glass jar (and because it already has sugar on it).  In addition, the water will evaporate over time, leaving more sugar behind.  This sugar will continue to cling to the sugar on the craft stick and build up over time.
