Formative Assessments for STEM: RERUN

By December 11th, 2023No Comments

RERUN is a formative assessment that requires students to think critically about an investigation that they have completed.  It takes a bit longer for students to complete, so it’s not recommended to use it as an exit ticket.

RERUN is an acronym that stands for: Recall, Explain, Results, Unsure, New Things.

Recall– In this section, students quickly summarize what they have learned in the project or investigation.

Explain– Students write 1-2 sentences explaining the purpose of the investigation.

Results– In this section, students share the results of their lesson/project/investigation and, more importantly, what they mean.

Unsure-This section gives students the opportunity to write what they are still unsure of after the investigation.  This might be literally what they don’t understand and it might be more of a philosophical wondering.

New Things– Students state at least two new things that they learned in the investigation.

This formative assessment also helps the teacher to determine how well students learned the learning goals that were presented in the investigation.  It is best used after a project or investigation but can also be used after a lesson or unit.
