Teaching STEM through Fairy Tales II- The Elves and the Shoemaker

By December 11th, 2023No Comments

This week, we are revisiting the tale of The Elves and the Shoemaker.  In this tale, the shoemaker cuts a pattern for a pair of shoes, but does not finish them.  He comes back the next morning to find the shoes complete.  He wonders who has done this work, so he stays up the next night to find out.  Much to his surprise, he finds two elves finishing the shoes for him!

Using only the provided materials,  students are challenged to work with a team to design and construct a pair of shoes that will fit a team mate.  Teams practice the NGSS engineering design performance expectations while participating in this fun challenge!

Each fairy tale in this popular series includes an engineering challenge design brief aligned to NGSS engineering design performance expectations, any supplementary resources needed (templates, targets, etc.) and interactive STEM notebook pages for your students that help them collect data and deepen their knowledge.  With easy to follow teacher directions that outline the criteria, constraints and procedures, these stress-free plans will help you effectively implement STEM!
