2024 EPIC Game: Easy Glider

The Electric Propulsion Innovation Challenge (EPIC) ignites a passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in middle and high school students (grades 6-12).

This project-based challenge inspires student teams to design, build, and fly an electric airplane that tackles a specific mission. Each year, the challenge presents a new scenario, keeping things exciting and pushing students to apply their STEM skills in creative ways.

Soaring Through the Design Process

The EPIC journey begins with teamwork. Students collaborate in groups of up to three, brainstorming and sketching their airplane designs. They need to consider factors like aerodynamics, weight distribution, and of course, how their aircraft will complete the designated challenge.

The building phase brings those designs to life. Students put their engineering skills to the test, selecting materials, constructing their airplanes, and integrating the electric propulsion system.

Throughout the process, there’s plenty of room for experimentation and iteration. Testing gliders and prototypes allows students to refine their designs and troubleshoot any kinks before the big fly-off.

Taking Flight at the Fly-Off

The culmination of all this hard work is the EPIC Fly-Off, where teams put their creations to the test. Volunteer judges evaluate the airplanes based on their performance in the challenge, design innovation, and project documentation.

But the EPIC Challenge isn’t just about winning. It’s about the incredible journey of discovery that students embark on. They develop critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork – all while having a blast with electric flight!
